Dali Llama or Dalai Lama? Who doesn’t enjoy a good surrealist pun? We present the Dali Llama, a drawing by Michael Phipps in the style of surrealist Salvador Dali, with an ode to several of Dali’s famous pieces.
Michael drew the Llama in pen and ink in a style similar to that of famous surrealist artist Salvador Dali. There are at least four paintings alluded to in this drawing: The Temptation of St Anthony, The Burning Giraffe, The Elephants and Dream Caused by the Flight of a Bee Around a Pomegranate a Second Before Awakening.
The piece was inspired by a play on the name of the Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama. The floating obelisk has some Tibetan markings to tie the pun to the art even further.
